Nicola Wheston was born in the UK and immigrated to Canada where, she received her citizenship in 1986. From 1972-1975 she attended the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford, England, and from 1977-1978 the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Since 1976 Nicola has had numerous group and solo exhibitions in Canada, England and Mexico, and her paintings can be found in private collections in the UK and North-America.

Nicola’s perspectives and use of light and colour create a sensation of being inside the painting’s space. Wheston explores the richness of the natural world focusing on a small moment within the intricacies of a tree’s bark, the movements of its branches, a root system of a fallen tree beside the ocean rather than long distance vistas filled with complicated compositional elements. Her landscapes surround the viewer with swaying foliage, air tinted green from the sunlight streaming through the leaf filled canopy, the scent of heated ground and water as it laps the shores. — Ian Tan Gallery, Vancouver
